UN Highlights over 32, 000 Cameroonians seeking Refuge in Nigeria, Calls for Action
While presenting the 2019 Humanitarian Response Plan for Cameroon to refugees in Abuja, Ms. Baiocchi, Cameroonian Humanitarian Coordinator and UN Resident reported that more than 32,000 Cameroonians are feared to have fled the country and taken refuge in neighboring Nigeria, due to increased insecurity and violence in the state. More so, she feared increased attacks in the country, which may lead up to more displacement of an estimated 4.3 million number of Cameroonians.
Calling for dire life saving assistance particularly for women and children because according to her, “Insecurity and violence in these regions have uprooted 437,000 people from their homes”, Baiocchi further lamented over under-funding of the response plan in 2018, adding that the number of refugees had significantly increased, resulting from the incessant conflict in Northeast Nigeria. She further called on all involved actors and partners to collaborate for more efficiency and swift response to conflict in the country.
