Tension in Anambra, As Police Cordon off Assembly Complex. Lawmaker, Others Teargassed
There was tension around the Anambra House of Assembly today, November 15. The resumed sitting of the State House of Assembly assumed violent dimension as policemen blocked the entrance to the premises, while they also sprayed tear gas. The sitting was the first after the Speaker, Rita Maduagwu, was impeached on Tuesday. However, She flawed the purported impeachment claiming the impeachment was carried out by less than tw0-third required members of the house.
No fewer than 300 policemen manned the Assembly area from the Alex Ekwueme Square entrance of the complex from 8 am, while workers of the judiciary and others who had any business in the area were denied entrance. Trouble began when a lawmaker mobilised some supporters to the House, allegedly to show solidarity for Maduagwu. The Police, however, repelled the protesters with tear gas.
